How do tazers work? If it was AC, then it would be easy as a step up transformer. It uses a 9V battery, however, so I have no idea. You can't have a transformer with DC, right?

its most likely a DC-AC converter and then step-up or a pizeo swtich and a transformer ( You can have a transformer with DC IIRC)

The only think I know of that does that is a commutator inverter....perhaps some sort of solid state equivalent?

Um, no. You have to have AC for a transformer. DC makes constant polarity magnetic fields.
