in episode 7 mythbusters have put 2 dead pigs in a car fore months. then they tryed to clean the car.

 

now i wonder if Ozongas would have worked.

Well, yeah, it is. What are you going to use to purify the room from the ozone you've pumped in? You can hurt people with too much concentration.

 

Consumer Reports did a piece a couple of years ago on the lawsuits brought against the Ionic Breeze air purifiers that pumped too much ozone into the room. I think ozone purification probably ranks up there with ion-cleansing and wristband magnets.

 

Maybe some wonderful site like dbunked could take a look into ozone purification (wink wink, nudge nudge, say no more).

next to Fluorine O3 is the most potent elemental oxidiser, without the toxic breakdown products that Fluorine produces.

it`s a great sanitizer.

 

although it will do the same to You also if your exposed to it, so these places are sealed up first and then the O3 generator (on a timer) is left to do its job.

 

intense UV is also good, but IIRC, that creates O3 as well.

Ozone after reacting becomes O2 and singlet O which most will soon recombine again to make another O2.

there`s no "Residue" left.

The distinction here seems obvious then. Using a fumigation process where a room or building is sealed from human interaction while the O₃ does it's work sounds like it would work. Using an air purifier that puts O₃ into the room with humans in it sounds questionable.

as for doing it with people about, well that IS somewhat questionable, but if the PPM count is low enough, then no harm / no foul.

Ozone levels near the sea are generally low. The idea that there's much ozone there is a myth.

On the other hand I have heard that ozone was used as an air steriliser come sanitiser on the London Underground.

As long as the levels are low the ozone won't do much harm. To get rid of the smell of a couple of long-dead pigs isn't something you could do with levels of ozone that wouldn't damage people (or at least not in any reasonable time sacle)

ozone breaks down quite quickly at sea level. the only reason it exists in the atmosphere at all is because it is continuously produced in the upper atmosphere.

 

an exposure to ozone for odour removal is fine for non-living things as long as ther is sufficient time for the ozone to break down back into oxygen before living things are hanging about them again. wouldn't want to use it while a human was in the same room though(i certainly wouldn't be standing there)

Ozone doesn't trap heat from the sun, rather it filters light from the sun:

 

From Wikipedia "Ground-level ozone is an air pollutant with harmful effects on the respiratory systems of animals. Ozone in the upper atmosphere filters potentially damaging ultraviolet light from reaching the Earth's surface."

 

It's a chemical that is beneficial for us being safe in the sun, but when at a great distance away from us. Seems to fit that old saying, "too much of a good thing can be bad for you".

Does it decompose Spontaneously ?

If so what would its half life be ?

What catalist would promote decomposition ?

When you say it filters UV ...

 

Does 02 not just absorb some of the UV's energy and because of that splits to form two singlet O's that then combine with O2 to form O3 ???

 

O2 + 2 O2 + UV -> 2 O3 + (no UV )or(a wave of less energy eg light)???
