potash is usualy considered as potassium carbonate, although the extension if often applied to other potassium based chems including potassium hydroxide, where the name original came from Ashes :)

and sure can use it, it`s just as good as the potassium chloride at displacing the sodium in sodium nitrate, mentioned in your gunpowder thread :)
