dom3mo Posted December 1, 2007 Posted December 1, 2007 Ok heres my layout I have a open flask with a burner under, the fkask aslo contains sulphur and a tube that goes into a beaker with hydrogen peroxide in it will this make sulphuric acid?
dom3mo Posted December 1, 2007 Author Posted December 1, 2007 OK is there any way to make sulphuric acid that is simlar to this? OK is there any way to make sulphuric acid that is simlar to this? sorry similar not simlar:doh: .
YT2095 Posted December 1, 2007 Posted December 1, 2007 well you will need to actually Burn the sulpher, that will require an air feed to maintain the flame, the SO2 gas that Then comes off can be bubbled through the H2O2. that will work, using your way you`d just be distilling elemental Sulpher and condensing it in H2O2.
YT2095 Posted December 1, 2007 Posted December 1, 2007 be careful though, you can`t see SO2 gas and if you cop a lungfull it WILL knock you on your ass! I use a small fish tank air pump to drive my combustion flask, it works quite nicely.
YT2095 Posted December 1, 2007 Posted December 1, 2007 likely to be particulate Sulpher or the SO2 reacting with the air humidity to form Sulphurous acid droplets. without actually being there and seeing you apparatus, I can`t really comment too exactly.
dom3mo Posted December 1, 2007 Author Posted December 1, 2007 Is there any way you can show me your apparatus im having trouble storing the sulphur dioxde to be injected into the hrdogen peroxide? thanks
YT2095 Posted December 1, 2007 Posted December 1, 2007 yeah, but it`ll take a while, wait a bit. ok, here is the basic set up that you`ll need: and this is the inside workings of the combustion flask: you can see where the air goes in, it`s the long external silicone tube with the glass tube just above the spoon that holds the burning sulpher. hope that helps
dom3mo Posted December 1, 2007 Author Posted December 1, 2007 ok i think I have made it is there any tests to see if it sulphuric acid "than seeing if it will disslove your skin".
YT2095 Posted December 1, 2007 Posted December 1, 2007 some Litmus to test for acidity would be a good start, and then add a little to some barium chloride, a PPT should form instantly that will not dissolve in HCl.
dom3mo Posted December 1, 2007 Author Posted December 1, 2007 oh well the acidty test showed a 6 on the paper so I guess ill have to try to make the acid again. wait no it showed up as 11 so i made the acid i think wooh.
YT2095 Posted December 1, 2007 Posted December 1, 2007 if the PH is 11 you`ve F*cked up Royally Acids are less than 7, ph 11 is a strong Base!
dom3mo Posted December 1, 2007 Author Posted December 1, 2007 oh crap then whats netrual 7? also is sulphuric acid usally 6?
YT2095 Posted December 1, 2007 Posted December 1, 2007 neutral is 7 yeah, 6 is acidic and the lower you go the stronger the acid. off the top of my head I don`t know the typical PH for Sulfuric, it`ll be less than 6 though. I gotta ask, are you messing about here or what?
dom3mo Posted December 1, 2007 Author Posted December 1, 2007 No im not im trying to make nitric acid once I get this done. You proably know this already but im sorta an amteur I done stuff like make copper(II)chloride, iron(II)oxide. And I made chlorates. So im not usally working with stuff like acids .
YT2095 Posted December 1, 2007 Posted December 1, 2007 just on spec, Have you used our search engine yet? http://www.scienceforums.net/forum/search.php I think you`ll find we have Dozens of threads on exactly this topic as well as the Nitric ones.
dom3mo Posted December 1, 2007 Author Posted December 1, 2007 yeah i have one was about a 13 year old trying to make the acid by using biusalte as for nitric acid I already know how to make that so thanks.
Melvin Posted December 2, 2007 Posted December 2, 2007 Has anyone tried the electrolysis of aq. copper sulfate? According to one book I've read, the reaction is: 2CuSO4 + 2H2O --> 2Cu + 2H2SO4 + O2 Also, see http://www.sciencemadness.org/talk/viewthread.php?tid=2824 A LOT OF GOOD H2SO4 IDEAS
dom3mo Posted December 2, 2007 Author Posted December 2, 2007 Cool ill try electro zing copper sulfate thanks.
Melvin Posted December 2, 2007 Posted December 2, 2007 You mean electrolyzing? (not electro zing) You would need a copper cathode (negative pole) and platinum anode (positive pole). A graphite anode might disintegrate. If it's working, you should see O2 bubbles coming from the anode and Cu depositing on the cathode.
YT2095 Posted December 2, 2007 Posted December 2, 2007 Why the hell don`t you just get a scrap Car Battery?????
dom3mo Posted December 2, 2007 Author Posted December 2, 2007 Because it would be kinda dangerous when the acid bubbeles out. And it takes out all the fun.
YT2095 Posted December 2, 2007 Posted December 2, 2007 well I can agree on the Fun part sure, but it`s Not dangerous! you just put on a pair of overalls and some goggles, take the battery caps off and pour it all into a plastic bowl, then pass it through a rockwool filter into a Non metal bottle and store it. it`s not going to rip your flesh off if you get a little on you!, just make sure you secure the bottle of acid safely and correctly labeled, and then change clothes and wash your hands I`ve done it a Kazillion times and also worked with Vats of near boiling sulphuric acid that go down 20 foot deep without a hand rail! it`s not until you go up into higher percentages that it will cause problems within a minute or 2 of exposure, it`ll rip the sh!t out your clothes tho!
