Melvin Posted December 2, 2007 Posted December 2, 2007 Just wondering...I didn't say I wanted to try it!
YT2095 Posted December 2, 2007 Posted December 2, 2007 Why the smeg don`t you just BUY some!!! it`s Filthy cheap and often sold in the Gallon or more.
dom3mo Posted December 2, 2007 Author Posted December 2, 2007 Yeah and making it from HS204 is like making a weaker acid.
insane_alien Posted December 2, 2007 Posted December 2, 2007 but HCl can do things that H2SO4 cannot. its a matter of usage rather than 'lolz my acid is stronger than your acid i b so 1337 and k3wl!one1!' also hydrochloric acid has a lower pKa than sulphuric acid so technically, HCl is stronger.
dom3mo Posted December 2, 2007 Author Posted December 2, 2007 OH well making metallic chlorides usally requirs HCI i think copper chloride will do the job its made by ecletrosis of two copper wires and its blue so.
Melvin Posted December 2, 2007 Posted December 2, 2007 Making metal chlorides does not require HCl!!!!!!! Just buy frickin' table salt!!!!!! Its pure sodium chloride!!!!!! Sodium chloride is a metal chloride!!!!!!
dom3mo Posted December 2, 2007 Author Posted December 2, 2007 Sorry I am kinda a amteur at this stuff ok and young. So I guess this is right correct me if im wrong but another way to make HCI is to heat HS204 and salt together wooh.
Melvin Posted December 2, 2007 Posted December 2, 2007 I think most people would know that salt is sodium chloride.
YT2095 Posted December 2, 2007 Posted December 2, 2007 ok, lets give the young guy a chance here, we don`t have to bash him for not knowing stuff on the condition that he LEARNS some chemistry whilst here. and if he learns some good chem, then I`m happy with that. I think we can all afford to give him a Chance.
Melvin Posted December 2, 2007 Posted December 2, 2007 I'm sorry dom3mo! Let me teach you something: 1. Salt is sodium chloride. 2. Heating H2SO4 and salt will give you HCl. 3. It is HCl, not HCI.
dom3mo Posted December 2, 2007 Author Posted December 2, 2007 Ok thanks, so is the gas HCl or the soultion becomes HCl or both?
YT2095 Posted December 2, 2007 Posted December 2, 2007 HCl is a Gas, but it dissolves well in water to make Hydrochloric acid. although anything above 35% HCl in water will have storage problems, as it will want to come out as a Gas again when it`s in a warm room.
Melvin Posted December 2, 2007 Posted December 2, 2007 Use an all glass apparatus when making HCl from H2SO4 and salt.
dom3mo Posted December 2, 2007 Author Posted December 2, 2007 Ok i have two flasks both sealed and contected with plastic tubing, one under the burner that holds the HS204 and a little bit of salt, another that holds water both are humdfying and I think its working. How much salt are you supposed to use i only used a little bit. Is there any tests i can do with HCl than lithmus?
Melvin Posted December 2, 2007 Posted December 2, 2007 Don't use plastic! It has to be glass! The equation is H2SO4 + 2NaCl --> 2HCl + Na2SO4. One mole of H2SO4 is 98 grams. Two moles of NaCl is 117 grams. So, mix 98g of H2SO4 with 117g of salt. HCl will react with iron or zinc to give hydrogen. Take your sample and add iron filings. If you see bubbles, see if they burn. If they burn, they are hydrogen bubbles. If they are hydrogen bubbles, you made HCl.
