PhDP Posted December 15, 2007 Posted December 15, 2007 I'm just curious to see how many people are playing chess here. I started recently and I really like it. It's a very good concentration training, I'm not surprised they're introducing it in elementary schools.
ydoaPs Posted December 15, 2007 Posted December 15, 2007 Didn't we have a chess tourney when we had an arcade?
PhDP Posted December 15, 2007 Author Posted December 15, 2007 I play chess. We should play sometime! yep, that would be very interesting, but as I said I'm quite new, I know the stalemate rule for less than 1 1/2 year How strong are you, and where do you play ?
CDarwin Posted December 16, 2007 Posted December 16, 2007 Didn't we have a chess tourney when we had an arcade? You had an arcade? Darwin, what's happened to all these cool extra things?
ydoaPs Posted December 16, 2007 Posted December 16, 2007 Dave got pwned at Chopper Challenge, so they got rid of the arcade....AGAIN!
Reaper Posted December 16, 2007 Posted December 16, 2007 Competitively or just casual play? I like competitive chess, and as such I'm a rated player.
PhDP Posted December 16, 2007 Author Posted December 16, 2007 I don't have any official rating yet. I'm rated a little below 1700 on FICS/ICC.
curiouslou Posted December 16, 2007 Posted December 16, 2007 Well chess is a fantastic exercise for the mind. simply to be different i tend to play the Chinese variant known as Xiang Qi. I find it slightly easier to play even though i grew up playing European/Indian Styled chess. It is truly a good game. I look back at my primary school years and am glad to have had a chess board in the class room whenever there was a rainy day.
insane_alien Posted December 16, 2007 Posted December 16, 2007 does drinking chess count? i tend to play that more than normal chess now. i'm not very good at either anyway. i can get the upper hand early in the game but when it comes to finishing it off i start losing concentration. unless i have a rook and a queen i find it impossible.
Royston Posted December 16, 2007 Posted December 16, 2007 does drinking chess count? i tend to play that more than normal chess now. I've played that a few times, do you have the shot glasses chess set ? Or have you come up with some alternative rules ? My house-mate has the drinking chess set, though it's in storage at the moment. Might be worth getting out for Christmas. http://www.shotglasschess.com/rules.htm
insane_alien Posted December 16, 2007 Posted December 16, 2007 i had the shotglass chess set but most of the shot glasses have since been broken for one reason or another so now we just play with normal pieces and have the shot glasses off to the side now. or we take a swig of the bottle. rules have remained the same.

It's a very good concentration training, I'm not surprised they're introducing it in elementary schools. I am. I'm a fairly good player, and have played in a few competitions. Compared to the average person, its pretty ridiculous
YT2095 Posted December 17, 2007 Posted December 17, 2007 fair enough then, you GO, and we`ll play chess don`t let the door hit you in the a$$
chemkid Posted December 17, 2007 Posted December 17, 2007 I play chess with who ever i can find. I am not very good at all and not many people i I know play, so i don't play much. Chemkid
MrMongoose Posted December 17, 2007 Posted December 17, 2007 I used to play in tournaments against other schools with the school chess club. Now I just play a couple of games on MSN chess every weekend, which probably makes me rustier if anything!
Sisyphus Posted December 18, 2007 Posted December 18, 2007 I play. In college I played maybe a dozen games a week, all casual, against a few different friends, who ranged in skill from beginners to a minor "chess celebrity." For a while I was pretty good, but I rarely play nowadays, and I'm definitely very rusty.
Mr Skeptic Posted December 18, 2007 Posted December 18, 2007 Chess is inferior to Go! I've recently become interested in Go, but haven't had much chance to learn how to play. I can't find many players. It does seem interesting that it hasn't been mastered by computers yet even though the rules are so simple.
CDarwin Posted December 19, 2007 Posted December 19, 2007 Has anyone ever played Field Commander? That's a pretty fun one.
PhDP Posted January 14, 2008 Author Posted January 14, 2008 Chess is inferior to Go! Probably, Chess is a very tactical game, it's made for computers . I just started to look at Go, it seems great ! Are you a good Go player ?
gcol Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 I taught my son to play chess, played lots, until he began to beat me, then I lost interest. I wonder why?
