lgitman Posted December 17, 2007 Posted December 17, 2007 grade 8 project drop egg from small height (i think 1 ft then higher and higher, max around 10ft) only use 10 straws 10 popsicle sticks 1 meter of tape 5 rubber bands 3 sheets of paper 1 mini paper cup 1 raw egg not necessary to use all need help to think of ideas
Cap'n Refsmmat Posted December 17, 2007 Posted December 17, 2007 Your goal should be to make a structure that can hold the egg securely and has a region below the egg that can crumple and absorb the energy. The rubber bands can help the egg survive by slowing down the energy transfer to it (instead of a sudden jolt, it gets a slower boing). The straws, because they can bend, should be used as the base to allow the thing to smoosh.
Mr Skeptic Posted December 17, 2007 Posted December 17, 2007 In addition to what Cap'n Refsmmat said, the paper cup would be to hold the egg, and the paper could make a parachute. The parachute, apart from slowing the fall, should ensure that it lands right side up. Alternately, you could crumple the paper as an additional shock absorber.
MrMongoose Posted December 18, 2007 Posted December 18, 2007 Rub two popsicle sticks together until they catch fire. Light the reamining sticks and the paper. Place the egg over the fire. Your yolk is now protected from reasonably high drops
Anvoice Posted December 25, 2007 Posted December 25, 2007 I'm gonna bet anything that I can build a cage or shell out of these materials that would protect an egg that falls 10 ft. As an idea: use the Popsicle sticks and straws as the structure, the tape to hold it together, and the paper to act a s a cushion along with the paper cup. If that is not allowed, use many layers of paper strips as a "cushion" for the egg, with stretched rubber bands on the bottom of this cushion to stop the fall shall it go through. In any case, wrap the tape around the egg shell: this will give it extra durability.
