valencyKr-94 Posted December 20, 2007 Posted December 20, 2007 Hi I want to make a hydrochloric acid i heard you can make it with salt and vinager. Could some one tell what the proportions are for that and i what precautions i should to take to handle and dispose of it. im just using it to clean pennies as an experiment im new to chemistry and thats all i have availbable right now. i also need to know how to check for purification too thanks to all in advanced:-)
gonelli Posted December 20, 2007 Posted December 20, 2007 Well, I can tell you that combining salt and vinager will probably not produce any hydochloric acid. In solution HCl ionises to H3O+ and Cl-. The Cl- is a weak base, so does not attract H ions to itself at all well. Acetic acid (CH3COOH), which is the acid in vinegar, is a weak acid, there is an equilibrium in solution of the CH3COOH and the formation of CH3COO- and H3O+. The equilibrium lies a long way to the protonated acid side. So, with conjugate base (CH3COO-) being a stronger proton attracter than water, this means it likes to stay as the CH3COOH. Even with the presence of the NaCl, the equilibrium for the Acetic acid may then shift as you allow the attraction of Na+ to the CH3COO- (but this is usually dissociated in solution anyway). The formation of HCl requires the removal of the acetic acid, the CH3COONa and the H2O from the solution. You are not really going to be able to do this at home.
YT2095 Posted December 20, 2007 Posted December 20, 2007 it does NOT work at all, AND this has also been covered Here: http://www.scienceforums.net/forum/showthread.php?t=29980 thread closed.
