Guest victo Posted March 4, 2004 Posted March 4, 2004 Hello, I’ am a student attending high school in Fullerton, California. For my English class we are doing a research project on controversial topics. For my topic I choose: Benefits of genetic engineering. I was wondering if I can interview you over email (victotam123@yahoo.com)by having you answer as much of the following questions as you can (If you would like to remain anonymous, please feel free to tell me in the closing of the email): Do you think genetic engineering is beneficial to mankind? Why or why not? Diseases: 1) Do you think using genetic engineering to cure hereditary diseases is a good idea? 1A) How do you feel about people who say, “We are playing God”; agree or disagree? 2) What are some examples of hereditary diseases genetic engineering has helped cure or slow down? 2A) Did you have or know anyone that has had any involvement in theses findings? 2a) Could you talk about it? Medicine: 1) Is genetic engineering really making the production of medicine cheaper? 1A) Is this 100% beneficial? 1B) Is there any downside to this? 2) Do you have any personal experience with using genetic engineering to help pharmaceutical research? 2A) Could you talk about what you did or are doing? 3) Do you know of any “bad” medicine made from genetic engineering? Crops/Livestock 1) Is genetically engineered crops like fruits and vegetables safe? 1A) Have there been any side effects? 1B) Any examples of monumental or exceptional success made in this field of research you would like to mention? 2) Any personal experiences with using genetic engineering on crops? 2A) Could you talk about what you did or are doing? 3) Is creating a “super cow” or “super plant” that can withstand harsh climates, viruses, or pest beneficial? 3A) Examples how it is or is not beneficial? 3B) Is this too much “Playing as God”? Is there anything you would like to add, or think I should mention? Please feel free to add suggestions or answer a question I did not include. Source Card: Could you please tell me about your occupation/job title and place of work? Would you like to be anonymous? Thank you very much for you time, your help, and for answering. I hope to hear from you shortly.

NSX Posted March 25, 2004 Posted March 25, 2004 hahaa I think we used to have a thread looking @ both sides of the argument under biomedical ethics though i can't seem to find it offhand... try the search funx
BrainMan Posted March 25, 2004 Posted March 25, 2004 Diseases: 1) Yes 1A) I think they are retarded. Disagree. 2) How the f**k should I know!? 2A) No. 2a) No. Medicine: 1) I suppose so. 1A) Yes. 1B) No. 2) No. 2A) No. 3) Yes. Crops/livestock 1) Yes, certainly. 1A) Definitely not! 1B) Not really, no. 2) No. 2A) Why would I? 3) Absolutely! 3A) Yes- super cows would be really cool to have and look at. People would pay money to see cows with giant heads, for example. This is both psychologically saticfying for the observers, and beneficial in terms of profit for the owners. 3B) There is no agreed upon definition of "God", so I must declare your question to be meaningless. Could you please tell me about your occupation/job title and place of work? I am a drug dealer. Would you like to be anonymous? No, I am currently looking for new customers to help with my cash flow.
