gib65 Posted December 27, 2007 Posted December 27, 2007 I'm trying to think of a type of chemical reaction that involves a rock and some other substance. What kind of rocks are most susceptible to chemical reactions and with what substances do they typically react? Acids? Oxygen? What would be a relatively quick reaction?
dubois928 Posted December 27, 2007 Posted December 27, 2007 The mineral Calcite reacts with Hydrochloric Acid by slowly dissolving it and producing carbon dioxide and water. Ken

Lime rock ([ce]CaCO3[/ce]) would be fine! First you heat it and the results are as the following equation: [ce] CaCO3 + Temp -> CaO + CO2 [/ce] but you must be careful to get all the [ce]CO2[/ce] out because the reaction is reversible so you might get [ce]CaCO3[/ce] again. When you have got CaO, just throw it on the water, the reaction that will take place is exothermic and you will get [ce]Ca(OH)2[/ce] dissolved in water!
