Cap'n Refsmmat Posted January 3, 2008 Posted January 3, 2008 Some of the staff recently brought up a rather interesting idea: Ground Up Threads, or GUTs as we like to call them. A GUT would explain a subject from the ground up (surprise) to the casual reader in a post-by-post format so the tutorial could be easily browsed and searched through for ideas and so the tutorial could be easy to understand. SFN could host GUTs on mathematics (similar to dave's long-lost calculus tutorials), physics, biology, and pretty much any science topic imaginable, as long as someone is willing to write the tutorial. Do you believe SFN should try this? If so, what should the GUTs be about?
ydoaPs Posted January 3, 2008 Posted January 3, 2008 The maths ones should come along slightly ahead of the physics ones.
Klaynos Posted January 3, 2008 Posted January 3, 2008 Sounds like an interesting plan, if people have time to write them
ydoaPs Posted January 3, 2008 Posted January 3, 2008 If I didn't work so much, I'd love to write some. I do have three days off soon, though.
Rakdos Posted January 3, 2008 Posted January 3, 2008 I could do some basic computer ones, if they were needed.
Cap'n Refsmmat Posted January 3, 2008 Author Posted January 3, 2008 Any possible topics to write about? I was thinking we'd cover calculus in more detail, some physics ("Relativity in a nutshell", basic Newtonian stuff, etc.), basic chemistry, and that's about all I can think of.

Definitely need a good bio GUT(something local to point to instead of things like talkorigins).
Reaper Posted January 3, 2008 Posted January 3, 2008 How about some basic computer programming tutorials too?
blike Posted January 3, 2008 Posted January 3, 2008 Dave's most excellent calculus thread is a good example of the GUT idea.
insane_alien Posted January 3, 2008 Posted January 3, 2008 i can do some on chemistry if needed. it'll have to be after my exams though
