thedarkshade Posted January 9, 2008 Posted January 9, 2008 I got an equation here but I can't damn recall how to finish it... some help plz... [ce]MnO2 + HCl -> ?[/ce] I know that this is a way to get elementary chlorine but that's it!
insane_alien Posted January 9, 2008 Posted January 9, 2008 that would produce elemental hydrogen but not elemental chlorine. you'd get managanese tetrachloride and hydrogen gas. EDIT: actually, are you talking about Weldon process? if you do then you are missing some reactants.
thedarkshade Posted January 9, 2008 Author Posted January 9, 2008 No no, one of the ways of getting chlorine is the reaction between hydrochloric acid and substances with high oxidation features ([ce]KMnO4[/ce] or [ce]MnO2[/ce]). You'd definitely get chlorine there.... but I'm stuck at what else? edit: one way is: [ce]2KMnO4 + 16HCl -> 2KCl + 2MnO2 + 5Cl2 + 8H2O[/ce] but what about with [ce]MnO2[/ce]
Darkblade48 Posted January 9, 2008 Posted January 9, 2008 A quick Google search yielded: MnO2 + 4 HCl ==> MnCl2 + 2 H2O + Cl2
thedarkshade Posted January 10, 2008 Author Posted January 10, 2008 Winner.... Thnx a lot! ... I needed this equation to finish the second part of my drill...
