Guest Suzz Posted March 6, 2004 Posted March 6, 2004 I'm not really sure if this belongs here but oh well, here goes: I read that perfect vacuums are impossible even with the best equipment. Can someone here please answer if this is true, and why. Thanks!
aommaster Posted March 6, 2004 Posted March 6, 2004 Yup! True! To make a perfect vacuum, you must have absolutely NO matter or any subatomic particles in a space. To make something like that is impossible, cause no matter how hard you try, there will yet be a little bit of air or some matter in it. Also, actually containing it is impossible. Glass doesn't work! Its impossible. Even space isn't a perfect vacuum!
Cap'n Refsmmat Posted March 6, 2004 Posted March 6, 2004 See, if you make a container out of glass or whatever, glass molecules will break off and prevent it from being a real vaccuum, and of course it's hard enough without a perfect vaccuum pump.

If some sort of ultradense shield was invented that was capable of shielding the small massive particles like neutrinos, then a perfect vacuum could exist for a short time. Only a short time because particles continually are created and destroyed due to vacuum flucuations.
