mk_2007 Posted January 18, 2008 Posted January 18, 2008 Is the digestion of protein the stomach by pepsin directly importnt for protein breakdown per se or is there another purpose or benefit in the production of gastric amino acids and peptides?
Paralith Posted January 18, 2008 Posted January 18, 2008 Other than the breakdown of digested enzymes, I don't think pepsin has any other (known) function. Is that what you're asking?
Mr Skeptic Posted January 18, 2008 Posted January 18, 2008 Well, you can use it as meat tenderizer, but that is probably not what you wanted to know. Perhaps it also serves to break down some of the poisons that are made of protein?
mk_2007 Posted January 19, 2008 Author Posted January 19, 2008 what I mean is..why is it so important to have peptides and gastric amino acids digested by pepsin?
Paralith Posted January 19, 2008 Posted January 19, 2008 what I mean is..why is it so important to have peptides and gastric amino acids digested by pepsin? The peptides that we ingest need to be broken down into their basic parts so that we can use them to build up our own proteins etc as needed.
Psycho Posted January 29, 2008 Posted January 29, 2008 The peptides that we ingest need to be broken down into their basic parts so that we can use them to build up our own proteins etc as needed. Indeed, plus only small molecules can be absorbed by the gut, pepsin isn't the only enzyme that the hydrolyses the polypeptides there are many in the process of digestion.
thedarkshade Posted January 29, 2008 Posted January 29, 2008 Deconstruct then construct the way you need it!
DrDNA Posted January 30, 2008 Posted January 30, 2008 Like Psych said, it's not just to break them down so they can be built up again. There is also the part about transport...making the molecules small enough and of proper nature so that they can be taken up by the gut and transported to various locations. Where they can be converted into BTUs, transformed into other macromolecules, neurotransmitters, hormones, membrane components, etc or pee pee'd. The ones that are not digested stay behind and are poo poo'd. PS: I've been wanting to say poo poo and pee pee for a long time. Thanks for the opportunity.
Leison Posted January 30, 2008 Posted January 30, 2008 is there another purpose or benefit in the production of gastric amino acids and peptides? other imp function is peptides are the stimulator of other gastric hormones which r produced in the git eg CCKPZ,GIP etc. aminoacids also help in Sod. co-transport. there r different transport sys for different a.a.,basic a.a,acidic a.a,imino acid, branched a.a,etc all has dirrent transport sys.
