Genetically Modifying Animals

I'm doing a science case study on genetically modifying animals, and I'm meant to get opinions.

So what is your opinion on whether genetically modifying animals should be allowed?

I see no problem with it.

 

Let the scientists go and engineer me a delicious steak for a nickel that doens't lead to heart and cholesterol problems and a chicken with 8 breasts and 10 legs.

 

 

We've been genetically modifying animals for years. Do you really think a dairy cow is the type of animal that would evolve without human intervention? What about the enormous breasts on chickens and turkeys?

 

We're simply improving our methods and techniques as we become more intelligent and technologically advanced. The issue is that those who don't really understand genetic modification feel "icky" about it. That's about the extent of the issue, and it's no reason to prevent it from happening.

When people get all stupid and loud-mouthed about Genetic modification, sometimes i like to let them get up a real good head of steam about it, and then point out that for about 15 years i was entirely dependant upon the secretions of genetically modified bacteria and i havent grown any weird protrusions or died of cancer or anything.

 

genetic modification isnt a frankenstein science. give it a chance

It's an interesting relatively new filed, worth to explore!

Well, considering the fact that humans have been selectively breeding and cross-breeding species for a very long time, genetically modifying animals isn't that new.

 

But the technology we have to pick precisly which genes or alleles we want in animals in very new, and that's definetly worth looking into.

A lot of GMO's (Genetically modified organisms) are simply single cell organisms. These only grow in labs (or factories, which in a way are just large labs).

 

Many types of yeast for example are GMO. These will be used to push towards a higher ethanol production from all kinds of feedstock to bioethanol plants. It enables us to use for example xylose as feedstock for ethanol.

 

Other microorganisms are grown to produce enzymes for us. This is a growing industry, which (I think) will have many benefits.

 

Just wanted to give two positive points of GMO's.

I think that genetially modified organisms are potentially dangerous but definitely advantageous. I think that the research should be allowed, but precautions should be taken. Much like is already being done. In any case, GMO are the logical next step after we have exhausted the usefulness of selective breeding. I'm not waiting millions of years for evolution to do its thing, I want results in my lifetime

No. Probably not.

There are many advantages, but on the other side of the coin, we have Africanized bees displacing native honey bees, kudzu vines overtaking the natural flora in the southern US, giant cane toads down under, zebra mussels in the great lakes, and dandelions as a very problematic weed in much of the US.

Herbacide resistant weeds from cross pollination with GMO crops are also a risk.

 

These are not all necessarily a result of GMO (nor are they all animals), but it does give some indication of the dangers associated with disrupting the natural balance with non-native flora or fauna.

Hasn't god given us the tools to do this? i see no moral problem with this. The Dogoe for example. it was genetically created from tens of species. The dog is loving, but is able to hunt bull. Extremely effective in my eyes.

I think its a great idea because we can gain great knowledge, that can be used to cure cancer and what have you, but if its borderline or anwhere near torture then i dont think it is that necessary. But its a very interesting topic.
