There is a gene called UROD, located on Chromosome #1

that is involved with some porphyria

http://ghr.nlm.nih.gov/gene=urod

"The UROD gene provides instructions for the production of an enzyme called uroporphyrinogen decarboxylase. This enzyme is responsible for the fifth step in the production of heme, the iron-containing part of hemoglobin."

Mutations of the UROD gene can cause porphyria

"Approximately 50 mutations that cause a form of porphyria called porphyria cutanea tarda have been identified in the UROD gene..."

Where is the UROD gene located?

"Cytogenetic Location: 1p34

Molecular Location on chromosome 1: base pairs 45,250,416 to 45,253,927"

============================

A half dozen other genes are mentioned here, besides UROD:

http://ghr.nlm.nih.gov/condition=porphyria

This page also mentions some NON-GENETIC causes, such as HepatitisC

and alcohol-induced liver damage. It isn't always inherited

generally, if you're having trouble researching a specific question, start by doing some general research about your subject. All that information that martin found can be located by a simple google search for porphyria. You may have been trying to be too specific with your search terms.
