Ice_Phoenix87 Posted March 13, 2004 Posted March 13, 2004 hey anyone got any experiments to try? I have been looking for some interesting ones to do. How come when zinc is added to HCl it turns the liquid purple? thanx
SmokingSkillz Posted March 13, 2004 Posted March 13, 2004 I may be wrong i am noob but i think Acids combine with alkali metals to create a metalic salt in this case ca chloride if you cool or evaporate the solution you might be left with zinc chloride. Zn + HCl -> ZnCl + H I dont know why it would be purple. Depending on reactivity series i think salts will react with acids and the metal may displace hydrogen in the acid to make a new salt and acid i.e H2SO4 + 2NaCl -> 2HCl + Na2SO4
YT2095 Posted March 13, 2004 Posted March 13, 2004 you`ve got contamination somewhere then, as Zinc Chloride is a clear hexagonal crystal (when all water`s evaporated), what were the sources of Zinc and HCl? btw, if you have those metals and acids, why don`t you take my Battery challenge
Ice_Phoenix87 Posted March 14, 2004 Author Posted March 14, 2004 Who me? take part in battery challenge? i got the HCl from hardware store. and zinc from school
YT2095 Posted March 14, 2004 Posted March 14, 2004 yes you! it`s open to all, and doesn`t involve "rocket Science"
Crash Posted March 14, 2004 Posted March 14, 2004 Where is this challenge? on the site, i browsed a bit but couldnt find it........got a link?
dslc1000 Posted March 14, 2004 Posted March 14, 2004 Hi Ice_Phoenix87. I hope you don't think I'm hijacking this thread - maybe it's not the kind of experiment you're looking for - but I devised a visual experiment a while ago, outlined here, which challenges the prevailling theory of visual awareness. If you or anyone else could carry it out and let me know if you get the same results as myself, I'd greatly appreciate it. Just a long shot!
YT2095 Posted March 15, 2004 Posted March 15, 2004 no worries, take a peek here; http://www.scienceforums.net/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=2863 and good luck )
ed84c Posted March 15, 2004 Posted March 15, 2004 Is it ZnCl that glows in the dark or ZnS, either way try making some.
YT2095 Posted March 15, 2004 Posted March 15, 2004 Zinc Sulfide and Calcium Sulfide both exhibit these properties, Zinc being the most often used
Ice_Phoenix87 Posted March 16, 2004 Author Posted March 16, 2004 how would you make zinc sulfide? i have both zinc and sulfur.
YT2095 Posted March 16, 2004 Posted March 16, 2004 a mole of each, both in powder form and mixed, then burn it, but be carefull, it is VERY exothermic and can actualy be used as rocket fuel!
Guest bkronbergs Posted March 24, 2004 Posted March 24, 2004 Somebody wouldnt mind just balancing this equation would they. Pb + HCl -------> PbCl + H
Crash Posted April 25, 2004 Posted April 25, 2004 More experiments. I need a experiment to do,(so insted of going the new post i thought id just go with this one, because it didn't get many good awnsers) prefreably a titration to do that is easy and contains easily obtainable chemicals
