how to make oxygen?

graphite rods are noramlly best' date=' pencil is one way of doing it, but proper graphite rods 1 or 2cm in diameter are best [for water anyway'] as it can vary with the substance.

If you plan on doing this for any amount of time you really need some platinum wire. The surface area of the electrode also makes a BIG difference.

why platinum wires, i thought [for water anyway'] that graphite was best.

That's what I thought too... But when I was trying to make tons of Potassium Hydroxide I left it on overnight one of the electrodes completely reacted...

I'm not sure why platinum but I have read that it’s completely inert in electrolysis and I know they use them in those little glass electrolysis machine things.

I've missed something here' date=' how do u make h2o2?

lol. [/quote']

Huh? Apparently I missed something too. The H2O2 is in another thread and I wasn’t making it I was only purifying it.

:D

Edit: oh wait H2O2 was in this thread... If you mix it with MnO2 it makes pure oxygen.

"Graphite for leving www.scitoys.com"

I knew about that page' date=' but I haven't found pyr. graphite at any other site. :<[/quote']http://www.scitoys.com/scitoys/scitoys/magnets/pyrolytic_graphite.html

is about levitating pyr graphite

Pyrolytic graphite is a synthetic material, made by a process called chemical vapor deposition. paragraph();

To make pyrolytic graphite, methane gas at low pressure (about 1 Torr) is heated to 2000 degrees Celsius. Very slowly, (one thousandth of an inch per hour) a layer of graphite grows

from: http://www.scitoys.com/scitoys/scitoys/magnets/pyrolytic_graphite.html

https://secure.avdns7.com/~scitoys/cgi-bin/shop.exe?page=magnet_desc.html

is the magasine, it mentions buying magnets [at the top] and says its good for the pyro graphite experiment, but indeed doesnt mention how you can obtain some.
