YT2095 Posted March 17, 2004 Posted March 17, 2004 what mechanism is at work when we like or dislike a peice of music on the first time of hearing it? I say the 1`st time of hearing to escape the problem of association with pleasurable or displeasureable events that we may link unconsciously to a particular peice of music. and I`de also like to exclude Video images too. you`re just sitting down and hearing a new song/instrumental for the 1`st time on the radio, your not particulary happy or sad. but you`ll either like the track, not like it, or are indifferent towards it. what govorns this response in us?
Skye Posted March 17, 2004 Posted March 17, 2004 The best explanation I've heard (though this was specifically referring to rhythm) was that it is the right balance of the familiar and unfamiliar. You need something you can understand and relate to, but also it has to have new and interesting parts.
YT2095 Posted March 17, 2004 Author Posted March 17, 2004 but what quaifies as "Interesting parts"? your point is good and certainly covers an aspect but surely Interesting is Subjective?
Skye Posted March 17, 2004 Posted March 17, 2004 I just liked it because it was simple. It certainly is subjective, the assumption is that a persons previous experience determines whether they will like it or not. The music itself isn't good or bad, but can only be judged so.
YT2095 Posted March 17, 2004 Author Posted March 17, 2004 I find it interesting because when I go through my MP3 collection (could be records or CDs or tapes) I notice that there doesn`t seem to be a real comonality between them? ok some do sure, I like what I think you guys call "Heavy Metal" but that`s not right across the board for me, I like many many other things too, as I`m sure I`m not the only one and consider myself an average kinda guy, I can only assume that others are the same in liking many different sorts of music, and non seem to share a general comonality. there are certain aspects I do like in particular for sure, but on occasion I`ll hear something that shares non of these and therefore throws my idea in the rubbish bin again! LOL I just don`t get it!
Crash Posted March 18, 2004 Posted March 18, 2004 You mean "black sabbath" or "Steppenwolf" i am sure you wouldnt listen to Napalm death or slipknot.......i think your personality has something to do with what you listen to as with the mood you are in.........
alt_f13 Posted March 18, 2004 Posted March 18, 2004 As far as my taste in music goes, I never really liked it until CD's came out, as the vinyl tasted too much like the kitchen floor. But nowadays with everything going to MP3's, music just loses more and more flavor by the day. Seriously though, for me, I love trance because of the steady beat and fluid melodies. It took me a while to discover this but I found, around 4 or 5 years ago, that I was always drawn to certain songs. Now I realize they all had a 4/4 kick drum. I think it matches my very methodical state of mind. And the spacey melodies match my fantastical imagination. Like Skye said, I think it has alot to do with what is familliar/unfamilliar, and your personality. And while we're on the subject, get my latest song. http://www.djglacial.com/files/Beyond_the_Light.zip It can also be found on my site.
YT2095 Posted March 18, 2004 Author Posted March 18, 2004 well thnx for your input, but this isn`t about advertising or even knowing what people like to listen to, it`s more to do with the mechanics behind it

I gave the example because I identified what it was in my personality that corrosponded with the music I listen to on a level higher than "it's loud," whereas most people have no clue. Capisce?
