dichotomy
Go with your doubt on this one. It was probably some tit that made it up. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forked_tongue A pretty poor Wiki entry, but it does state - "Reptiles smell using the tip of their tongue, and a forked tongue allows them to tell which direction a smell is coming from." Which begs the question, what are their nostrils for? Purely oxygen holes?
Vexer
I think people have two nostrils for the same reason that men have nipples. I was serious. Given a successful generally "dichotoimic" model, something would have to be *wrong* with having two (anything) for it to be weeded out. Men have nipples, women have clitoris's. If there no reason why they *shouldn't*, Nature (evolution) works with the plan it has. "If it's not broke, fix something else".
iNow
IMen have nipples, women have clitoris's. You know that the clitoris is analogous to the frenulum, which is found on the underside of the penile shaft near the crown... It's not analogous to nipples, as women have those too, last time I checked.
rockymtnblue
Though somewhat unrelated, I remember reading some information once that claimed about 80% of the population have a stronger sense of smell through the left nostril. This is due to the nose not being correctly aligned with the nasal passage.
