phish123 Posted April 12, 2008 Posted April 12, 2008 I've looked up the concept relativity of simultaneity on wikipedia and am having trouble understanding . I looked at the train and platform thought experiment and dont really understand it too well. It would be pretty nice if someone could help me out
iNow Posted April 12, 2008 Posted April 12, 2008 I found this site some time ago, and it helped me to work through some issues in my own understanding. Maybe it will help you as well. The issue of the train and simultaneity: http://faraday.physics.utoronto.ca/GeneralInterest/Harrison/SpecRel/Flash/Simultaneity.html More general overview available at the following: http://faraday.physics.utoronto.ca/GeneralInterest/Relativity.html
swansont Posted April 12, 2008 Posted April 12, 2008 Short answer: because c is constant in all frames, people will disagree on measurements of length, time and simultaneity (this is after accounting for c being finite). Agreeing that two events were simultaneous requires that there be an absolute way to measure how far away something is and what time it is, and there is no absolute reference frame.
