Scientists are first people, and people, regardless of vocation and/or training tend to do all manner of unreasonable things... IMO, this tendency of doing (even) unreasonable things would be only because one might have fun doing that. By this view, I agree:-).

That is how a lot of things were discovered, including the discovery that I am not in fact double-jointed...unfortunately this discovery was also quite painful. 1
