nikitoz Posted May 12, 2008 Posted May 12, 2008 Hi, everyone. One day I've seen some kind of (photo?)filming, when camera captures the movements of gas. I mean, the viewer can see, how gas expands and so on. Does someone know the name of this kind of filming? Maybe you can give me some links to articles or videos? ) I'll be very thankful, thanks in advance. p/s. Sorry for my ban English, I'm from Kazakhstan
ecoli Posted May 12, 2008 Posted May 12, 2008 you're probably going to want a camera that films with a high frame rate. From what I understand, they can be pretty expensive, however. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frame_rate
swansont Posted May 12, 2008 Posted May 12, 2008 Schlieren optics/photography will allow you to see density changes. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schlieren_photography http://www.fas.harvard.edu/~scidemos/LightOptics/SchleirenOptics/SchleirenOptics.html

Rev Blair Posted May 13, 2008 Posted May 13, 2008 If you are on a tight budget: If the gas is visible in the spectrum we see in, multiple strobes fired in sequence will work. The equipment is relatively inexpensive that way. You can also build your own Schlieren lighting using an inexpensive fresnel lens on the light head. I used to have a book on special effects and scientific photography (often the same thing) that had some pretty detailed instructions on how to build these things, but I loaned it out, then moved away. Now I can't even remember the title.
