you want a really good series of sci-fi books, read something by Octavia E.Butler.

my favorite series is Lillith's brood, its a post-apocalypse series, where mysterious gene-tradeing aliens rescue the human race, but they underestimate our abilities to disillusion ourselves. the first one is called Dawn.

the other series by her that i like is called the patternmaster series its about an immortal parasite who is attempting to build a race of psychics, the first one is i beleive called wild seed check them out, they're some of my favorite books right next to the Halo series.
