alan2here Posted June 5, 2008 Posted June 5, 2008 I'm looking for software to log an Internet connections down times. When it is working and when no data can be sent\received logged into a file. Idearly It would give a little more information than that. It does not matter if the file can only be viewed from whiten the program but the program must be free or very cheap and may need to be able to be run on many PC's. Any Ideas?
antimatter Posted June 5, 2008 Posted June 5, 2008 I can't say I know what you're looking for, but just out of curiosity, what do you need this software for?
Pleiades Posted June 6, 2008 Posted June 6, 2008 I can’t find it now, but I used a ping program that could ping an address repeatedly and log the result, I had it set to ping my ISP’s DNS server.
Softix Posted June 6, 2008 Posted June 6, 2008 check your Internet Temporary Files. All data while you connect to internet goes there.
Cap'n Refsmmat Posted June 6, 2008 Posted June 6, 2008 There are free Internet services that'll check a website to see if it's still up. You could set up DynDNS on your computer and then use one of them. I've used HostTracker before.
alan2here Posted June 6, 2008 Author Posted June 6, 2008 (edited) I'm working with a company that may be using an intermittent Internet connection. For example it is up for 2hours, then goes down for 5mins and nobody inside the company can access the Internet, then comes back up for another few hours. I'm trying to get the bottom of what is happening. DynDNS = Dynamic DNS? Is this a fairly simple procedure? Isn't temporary Internet files just lists of downloaded files from web browsing with IE? alan2here Posted June 6, 2008 Author Posted June 6, 2008 I think the problem probably has more to do with there understanding about what a computer or a network is. My work is somewhat unrelated to this problem and I work physically away from the company and am only able to get there occasionally but I still have an interest in helping them with it. I think it would be a little early to call there ISP just yet although it could be part or all of the problem. There ISP is BT.
Mr Skeptic Posted June 16, 2008 Posted June 16, 2008 It might not be what you are looking for, but Netcraft.com is a website that tracks other websites and gives you lots of information about them including uptime.
omnimutant Posted June 16, 2008 Posted June 16, 2008 This would be a cool way to stick it to your ISP to show them proof that their service might need serious improvement. If it was standardized it might even force better service for the whole ISP industry.
