Cap'n Refsmmat Posted June 8, 2008 Posted June 8, 2008 Yesterday SFN passed 400,000 posts. We've effectively doubled our number of posts since September 2005. Our post rate is going up and we've got plenty of new members -- in fact, we recently passed 10,000 members. I think this milestone is a cause for celebration. Good work, everyone, and let's hope we can double our postcount yet again in another three years. (Go exponential growth!)
thedarkshade Posted June 8, 2008 Posted June 8, 2008 Congratulations to the staff! It is the wonderful place around here that has influenced in having this huge number of posts, of course compared to the number of regular posters.
Reaper Posted June 10, 2008 Posted June 10, 2008 I think this milestone is a cause for celebration. Good work, everyone, and let's hope we can double our postcount yet again in another three years. (Go exponential growth!) This would be linear growth, if I'm checking your history correctly, not exponential growth. If it was exponential, then you would have to make 800,000 more posts over the next 3 years (meaning your post count would have to be 1,200,000 in 2011, not 600,000).
Cap'n Refsmmat Posted June 10, 2008 Author Posted June 10, 2008 Well, whatever the case, our growth rate is increasing linearly, so our postcount is increasing at an increasing rate. I hope our post rate increase increases
Mr Skeptic Posted June 16, 2008 Posted June 16, 2008 If the number of (active) users increases linearly, and their individual posting rate is more or less constant, then the post count would increase as a rank 2 polynomial ([math]ax^2 + bx + c[/math]). A linear increase would actually be somewhat surprising, as the number of users can increase faster the more users there are, the higher on a search engine we are, etc. However, too much growth has the potential to ruin the atmosphere, as it would be harder for members (or mods) to be personally acquainted with each other, a high search ranking could attract a different type of poster (trolls, people wanting free handouts on homework, etc). Or, maybe we could grow big enough to increase interest in science in the population at large. Don't really know.
CDarwin Posted June 16, 2008 Posted June 16, 2008 I've actually always wondered if the number of active members stays relatively constant over long periods. Obviously the number of registered members increases, but most of those don't post more than a few times, and active members drop off periodically. Don't worry, I'll be here, until, well, 2012 apparently.

Reaper Posted June 17, 2008 Posted June 17, 2008 How many known sockpuppets are there registered on SFN? I'm pretty certain that this might inflate the number of actual people who have registered, though probably not by that much.
Ladeira Posted June 18, 2008 Posted June 18, 2008 Don't worry, I'll be here, until, well, 2012 apparently. I hope I won't stop posting (or as CDarwin said, not until 2012). So, hope it keeps growing exponentially (or linearly)... I liked SFN and I won't go away soon. o/\o
CDarwin Posted June 19, 2008 Posted June 19, 2008 Your wish is my command. http://www.scienceforums.net/forum/album.php?albumid=1&pictureid=148 Oooh. Thank you.

Probably around a hundred. revprez and atomikpsycho would make up most of those.
