nitric Posted June 17, 2008 Posted June 17, 2008 what kind of eqipmement should I use to make nitric acid. I've heard that HNO3 will dissolve rubber. Could I use cork stoppers.
hermanntrude Posted June 18, 2008 Posted June 18, 2008 with conc nitric, I always stick to glass. I wouldnt advise making it at all, but if you do, good luck and please dont hurt yourself MSDS for nitric acid-PLEASE READ
YT2095 Posted June 18, 2008 Posted June 18, 2008 you can use cork, but you must wrap several layers of PTFE tape over them. stick to using all glass
frosch45 Posted June 18, 2008 Posted June 18, 2008 carefull, nitric acid will burn anything not inert, but, as yt said, ptfe (teflon) tape is inert so it will not dissolve in the acid there was a really big thread on this pretty recently, scroll down in the inorganic chemistry section
