How Does This Recharging Mat Work?

I remember being quite excited by this charging mat when it first came out. apparently you could recharge any device after first plugging the mat into the mains. You could then automatically charge up any electronic device that contained rechargeable batteries. However, what has happened since and how does it work? Because I need one!

Have you ever seen those electric toothbrushes, like sonicare? They get charged just by resting them on the charger. It's the same principle, and is called magnetic inductance.

That's probably wired into the the circuitry of the device. This won't charge up just any device — they have to be outfitted with a proper pickup loop. You'd probably put a small circuit in to sense the charge and disengage charging when it's finished.
