frosch45 Posted July 7, 2008 Posted July 7, 2008 Cu (s) + Cl2 (l) Chlorine could oxidize the copper rite? I was just wondering if the products would be CuCl or CuCl2 or maybe some of both?
John Cuthber Posted July 7, 2008 Posted July 7, 2008 I'm not sure if the reaction takes place at any sensible rate at the low temperatures required to liquefy Cl2. If it does then the next question would be does CuCl or CuCl2 dissolve in liquid Cl2? If not then the reaction will just oxidise the surface of the Cu. If the salt dissolves exposing fresh Cu to the liquid then the reaction will give CuCl if there's an excess of Cu and CuCl2 if there's an excess of Cl2. However I'd sugest leaving this as a thoretical matter because liquid Cl2 really isn't nice stuff to play with
frosch45 Posted July 7, 2008 Author Posted July 7, 2008 Where could you find out if CuCl/CuCl2 dissolves in Cl2? I was actually looking for a source of copper (I) chloride. If there is any other way to get it.... I am only looking for a small amount for a little collection. Nothing more than 5 g or so. I would even be willing to buy it if I had a supplyer that carried it...
