aommaster
Hmmm... i remembered it about 2 days ago, but now, i have forgotten it. There is an astronomical effect called mercury .......... . It affects mobile phones. It happens about 3 times a year. Can u please tell me what it is called, and some more info about it?
swansont
Hmmm... i remembered it about 2 days ago, but now, i have forgotten it. There is an astronomical effect called mercury .......... . It affects mobile phones. It happens about 3 times a year. Can u please tell me what it is called, and some more info about it? It's an astrological "effect," not an astronomical one, associated with Mercury going retrograde. That is, Mercury's path appears to change direction, because of its different orbital speed with respect to ours. Apparently astrologers associate Mercury with communication. There's nothing real to this.
Crash
http://www.lunaresearch.com/retrograde.htm I never even heard of this......quite interesting
aommaster
can this actually be true? Yeah, and it is mercury retrograde. A forgot it!

aommaster
hmmm... what i yet don't understand, what really happens to mercury during retrograde? It changes it spin in what way?
Sayonara
I don't think Mercury actually changes its direction; I think we just overtake it. Or it overtakes us, whichever.
aommaster
isn't it possible to actually simulate what happens?
alt_f13
yes, but to what end?
aommaster
like calculate the speed of rotation of mercury and try and relate that to what actually happens
alt_f13
But if you simulated it properly it would be the same, and comparison would be rendered useless. I don't think I get what you wish to achieve.
aommaster
well, no, actually, you understood me correctly, and answered my question. Thanx!
alt_f13
Mercury's orbital period is 1/4 that of ours, so it makes a complete orbit around the sun almost 4 times per year. The result is that Earth appears to be changing orbital direction, when compared with Mercury, when it is overtaken. There is not much to it. [edit] Glad I could be of service. *scratches head*
