Santomartino Posted July 16, 2008 Posted July 16, 2008 I don't know much about this so don't get mad at me, but I have an idea to help the planet. But for my idea to work, I need to know if this is possible:confused:
insane_alien Posted July 16, 2008 Posted July 16, 2008 well H2O is water. anything else, isn't. its like saying what other letter other than d will be the same as d. 1
Santomartino Posted July 16, 2008 Author Posted July 16, 2008 well H2O is water. anything else, isn't. its like saying what other letter other than d will be the same as d. OK, any composition that will simulate water?
YT2095 Posted July 16, 2008 Posted July 16, 2008 simulate in what way? being a liquid? well mercury`s a Liquid too. being Clear? Methanol is clear also. can you see where you need to be a little more Specific here? although D2O is probably the closest all rounder to H2O.

YT2095 Posted July 16, 2008 Posted July 16, 2008 as much as I`d like to say `Beer` I`m afraid that it doesn`t count as it`s the water content that would qualify. in a nutshell, there is Nothing that could be used instead of it.
hermanntrude Posted July 16, 2008 Posted July 16, 2008 water is unique and everywhere you look on earth. the supply will never run out, although the supply of clean, safe, drinkable water for human consumption might, in some places. That'd be our problem, rather than the earth's
Gilded Posted July 16, 2008 Posted July 16, 2008 As mentioned there isn't a way to "simulate water" for purposes of consumption. Our cells are delicate and require specifically H2O, to the extent that even heavy water (the D2O YT mentioned) will kill a human in a few weeks if it is exclusively consumed in a pure form instead of normal water.
Pangloss Posted July 16, 2008 Posted July 16, 2008 Kudos for what turned out to be an interesting question (and answers), though.
ydoaPs Posted July 16, 2008 Posted July 16, 2008 Our cells discriminate against a few extra neutrons? I thought cellular activity was based on chemistry(electron arrangement changes).
insane_alien Posted July 16, 2008 Posted July 16, 2008 it is but since deuterium is twice as heavy as normal hydrogen it afftects the kinetics of some reactions. specifically a lot of them slow down.
frosch45 Posted July 17, 2008 Posted July 17, 2008 (edited) Even if the electron arrangements were the same, the fact of the matter is that it would be bad for us. There is just no substitute for pure good old dihydrogen monoxide. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heavy_water read "Effect on biological systems" Hey wanna hear a really really good joke (here again, text is unable to convey my sarcasm) but still, its amusing, though I wouldn't want to try to pick up another guy/girl with it -Do you love water? -Yes -Then you love over 75% of me! dirtyamerica Posted July 17, 2008 Posted July 17, 2008 I thought he meant other compounds that you can use to make water.
YT2095 Posted July 17, 2008 Posted July 17, 2008 I thought he meant other compounds that you can use to make water. this would seem to indicate Otherwise. Something that if the world's water supply fails (hypothesizing) then we could use it instead of water
