frosch45 Posted July 23, 2008 Posted July 23, 2008 well, that's one name at least.... I was just going around the web looking at some chemistry stuff and I came across a website selling "Sodium Polyacrylamide" Apparently, it is used in those collars that cool you down and that you wear around your neck. I was wondering if anyone had any additional information. Does it have the same basic affect as ammonium nitrate does when it dissolves in water? Or is there something more happening? No wikipedia page, grrr..... thanks
John Cuthber Posted July 23, 2008 Posted July 23, 2008 I think they are refering to this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sodium_polyacrylate or its copolymer with acrylamide the stuff soaks up water like a sponge so I guess that its just the water evaporating that provides cooling.
frosch45 Posted July 23, 2008 Author Posted July 23, 2008 Thanks I was gonna say, a chemical without a wikipedia page!? Well, of course there are some, but I wonder if I should trust these guys. I mean, if you mispell the name, it really shows how much they know about it... how good a quality of substance that they are selling....
wolf_merker Posted July 24, 2008 Posted July 24, 2008 Watch out for acrylamide. In it's non-polymerized form it is a neurotoxin.
John Cuthber Posted July 24, 2008 Posted July 24, 2008 "Watch out for acrylamide. In it's non-polymerized form it is a neurotoxin." You forgot to mention that it's difficult to avoid as it's present in lots of cooked foods.
