magic8ball Posted July 27, 2008 Posted July 27, 2008 atomic number versus atomic radius... is there any link??? for example; Hydrogen (H) atomic number = 1 atomic radius =25 is there any link? i have a graph with atomic numbers and radius's and now it is telling me to describe and explain!!!! aaaarrrrggggghhhhh
Gilded Posted July 27, 2008 Posted July 27, 2008 There are many factors that affect the atomic radius. The Wikipedia article has a decent summary about it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atomic_radius ( Try to think about it too, not just copypaste from Wikipedia. )
ecoli Posted July 27, 2008 Posted July 27, 2008 there are a lot of factors, but there are trends associated with the periodic table and atomic radius (of atoms in the ground state). Atomic radius tends to decrease going across a row, and increase going down a column. Be careful though, you can't compare diagonally.
steiner Posted July 31, 2008 Posted July 31, 2008 As you increase the positive charge in the nucleus, the electrons are pulled in more causing the radius to decrease. But this is more than offset by electronic shielding when a new shell is formed. Try and see the pattern that emerges, although sub shells confuses things a bit I think.
