ParanoiA Posted August 15, 2008 Posted August 15, 2008 A horrible thing happened yesterday. My employer has blocked scienceforums.net. I clicked my favorite, at the tip top I might add, and I was shocked to be presented with the "Website Blocked" screen, under the category of MSGBRD. Unless I can come up with a valid business reason, I'm essentially outa here. I can't believe the IT folks noticed my usage enough to block it. Hell, I didn't think I was accessing it that much. I'm a hard, efficient worker, and most people who work with me wouldn't think I have the time to even post here, but I do most of it from work. I can multi-task with the best of them. So why?? I've grown quite fond of the people and the level of intellect here and many of my views have been changed and refined due to this wonderful board. I've become...attached. This is actually kind of depressing. I felt so lost today. Anyone else suffer this fate? I need to be more computer savvy, and figure a way around this...
Cap'n Refsmmat Posted August 15, 2008 Posted August 15, 2008 https://www.scienceforums.net Try it. It might just work. (Note the s in https.) You'll have to tell your browser to ignore that our certificate is self-signed, but it might just work. (Some links may be directly to the "old" site, so some things might not work right.)
Pangloss Posted August 15, 2008 Posted August 15, 2008 If that doesn't work try a proxy server. Here's a free one I used a while back: http://www.freeproxyserver.net/ If that one doesn't work, google "free proxy servers".
ParanoiA Posted August 16, 2008 Author Posted August 16, 2008 Damn, you guys got this all figured out. I should have known. Thanks! I can't wait to try tomorrow.
iNow Posted August 16, 2008 Posted August 16, 2008 Dude, I work a lot of hours, but not on Saturday! I can't believe you put in weekend time for a company that blocks SFN! I could be screwed if my company did sometihng similar. I usually write these huge queries, then click the process button. They take lots of time, and that's when I come here to catch up and comment. (although, I must concede, I spend a lot of time on teleconferences also, where people are droaning on and on about remedial crap... the stuff that could be covered in 4 minutes but somehow manages to take 90... and I'll "multi-task" during those periods, too). I'd be twiddling my thumbs and scratching my ass during that time if they blocked me. Please let us know if the work arounds above work for you. There may come a day when I have to try them.
Ladeira Posted August 16, 2008 Posted August 16, 2008 It sounds like my school. They block any url with the word "forum"... so, here is also blocked to there... the good is that i do not use internet so much there. good luck... proxy servers usually work... but be careful or they might catch the trick
Gilded Posted August 16, 2008 Posted August 16, 2008 I think the only site that was blocked in my high school was a Finnish equivalent of Facebook/MySpace/whatever. Which of course greatly amused me as I hate those kinds of sites. As for other possibly blocked sites I must admit that I never tried to browse for porn though.
swansont Posted August 16, 2008 Posted August 16, 2008 I'm blocked at work now, and the https doesn't work. No surfing while monitoring other things, and no surfing at lunch or on break. Proxy servers are strictly verboten.
insane_alien Posted August 16, 2008 Posted August 16, 2008 use your mobile phone as a modem. that'll bypass everything.
ParanoiA Posted August 16, 2008 Author Posted August 16, 2008 Dude, I work a lot of hours, but not on Saturday! I can't believe you put in weekend time for a company that blocks SFN! Heh, yeah I have to ask myself, does it violate my principles to even work at all for a company that would do such a thing? Luckily for them, my principle of eating trumps my principle of not blocking SFN. Oh, and my "tour" is Tues - Sat - so don't worry, I'm not giving them a second of overtime! I'm blocked at work now, and the https doesn't work. No surfing while monitoring other things, and no surfing at lunch or on break. Proxy servers are strictly verboten. I do believe this will be my fate. https will be my first attempt, but I'm not sure about trying proxy servers - if they would consider that sneaky or malicious.
Royston Posted August 16, 2008 Posted August 16, 2008 Heh, yeah I have to ask myself, does it violate my principles to even work at all for a company that would do such a thing? I was told off a few years ago, for overuse (heh, SFN addict), but I've moved desks and can get away with it now. Surely you can squeeze in the odd half an hour or so, when you're at home, or are you just too busy ? I'm surprised this site hasn't been blocked at work, I'll be mortified if that happened, because I'm just too busy in the evenings (my degree would suffer, albeit I'm on here to learn.) I hope you're not essentially 'outta here', surely it's not a be all, or end all.

I'm just too wrapped up in writing, music and home improvement to have time to really do this thing here. Happily, the HTTPS solution is working, since here I am at work. Thanks Cap'n. Now, off to see if they've blocked the Olympic coverage...
dethfire Posted August 17, 2008 Posted August 17, 2008 Employers are getting very aggressive with blocking. I know of a few buddies who can't get one certain science sites now.
Blade Posted August 19, 2008 Posted August 19, 2008 you can alway's surf around on fthisjob.com and customerssuck.com
John Cuthber Posted August 19, 2008 Posted August 19, 2008 Claim that science is your faith and that they are depriving you of the right to worship here.
swansont Posted August 19, 2008 Posted August 19, 2008 Claim that science is your faith and that they are depriving you of the right to worship here. They're allowed to. It's the government that can't deprive you of this (in the US, at least).
Gilded Posted August 20, 2008 Posted August 20, 2008 They're allowed to. It's the government that can't deprive you of this (in the US, at least). Every employer works for the Man, man! Damn them, circumventing the First Amendment.
the tree Posted August 22, 2008 Posted August 22, 2008 I severly hope that you don't do something important at work that requires your undivided attention. Right now I'm watching a set top box pausing live television to see if anything goes wrong in an hour, I have to browse the Internet otherwise I will go completely insane.
Dak Posted August 22, 2008 Posted August 22, 2008 mayhaps we should mirror ~/forums/ onto something else like ~/imreallyworking ? although, if it's just a regex match for 'forums' i suppose the fact we're called scienceforums would get us blocked?
