Consider what would happen to the cell if there were free mixing of the electrolytes (i.e. you just dumped everything into one beaker). Consider what would happen if there was no connection between the two cells (i.e. you had the anode and its electrolyte in one beaker, and the cathode and its electrolyte in another beaker).
