jewyles Posted September 9, 2008 Posted September 9, 2008 This is from a practice test my teacher gave me. Which would be a better solvent for I2? C6H6 or CH3OH and why?
ecoli Posted September 9, 2008 Posted September 9, 2008 Measuring relevant solvent strength is related to polarity. Compare the polarity of all three molecules and remember that "like dissolves like."
jewyles Posted September 9, 2008 Author Posted September 9, 2008 ok, so I2 is nonpolar, so the best solvent would be C6H6 because it is also nonpolar?
CaptainPanic Posted September 9, 2008 Posted September 9, 2008 That sounds like a good answer and a good explanation.
John Cuthber Posted September 10, 2008 Posted September 10, 2008 It's a fine answer and a good explanation. But is it right? I2 is more soluble in ethanol (about 21%) than in benzene (about 14%). I can't find the data for methanol, can anyone else? Incidentally, what colour is the solution of iodine in the 2 solvents? What colour is iodine vapour?
