aommaster Posted April 18, 2004 Posted April 18, 2004 How to they separate uranium 238 from 235? One of them is three neutrons heavier! How do they do it? Is there a way of taking out three neutrons from 238 to become 235?
AntiMagicMan Posted April 18, 2004 Posted April 18, 2004 Gas Centrifuge is one way. The uranium is heated up until it is a gas and then spun around to seperate the isotopes.
aommaster Posted April 18, 2004 Author Posted April 18, 2004 doesn't that take really special equipment? Also, how big is the gas centrifuge?
greg1917 Posted April 18, 2004 Posted April 18, 2004 Yes it takes special equipment, which is why so few countries around the world are able to produce enough to make nuclear weaopns. http://www.sciencedaily.com/encyclopedia/isotope_separation 1
swansont Posted April 18, 2004 Posted April 18, 2004 Here is a little more on gaseous diffusion separation.
Sayonara Posted April 19, 2004 Posted April 19, 2004 I use a sieve. http://www.bigceramicstore.com/Supplies/sieves-scales/talisman_rotary_sieve.jpg
aommaster Posted April 19, 2004 Author Posted April 19, 2004 how does that work??? Or is this one of ur jokes
aommaster Posted April 19, 2004 Author Posted April 19, 2004 is the mesh fine enough to let U235 enter, but not U238? And if that was the case, then, countries would not be caught out because the equipment, i was told was very big! I yet think this is another one of ur jokes
Sayonara Posted April 19, 2004 Posted April 19, 2004 Yeah, U235 goes straight through but U238 gets it's neutronies caught.
aommaster Posted April 19, 2004 Author Posted April 19, 2004 ok. THAT i don't beleive! The thing about this forum is that i can't tell the tone of ur voice
Sayonara Posted April 19, 2004 Posted April 19, 2004 lol I posted a picture of a hand sieve; of course it's a joke. Where would I get U235 from anyway? 1
aommaster Posted April 19, 2004 Author Posted April 19, 2004 You just LOVE to pull peoples' legs don't you! That last post actually made you loose folling me, the one about the neutrons! I was going to beleive you! The seive, i knew that it wasn't a real one, cause i looked at the adress, as it was something to do with ceramics. I DID think that you wanted to show me what a seive looks like, and i was thinking 'What was THAT for?!" Nice!
aommaster Posted April 19, 2004 Author Posted April 19, 2004 yup! and u ruined it urself! I actually added some reputation points for that! Its was a mean trick!
aommaster Posted April 19, 2004 Author Posted April 19, 2004 yeah. I have to admit that he has a good sense of humour! I like people like him!
