jrayj Posted October 18, 2008 Posted October 18, 2008 I heard somewhere what you can make aluminum powder easily by arching two pieces of aluminum under oil (like diesel). Will this work or will it only make aluminum oxide?
YT2095 Posted October 18, 2008 Posted October 18, 2008 you may get Some, but you`ll also have impurities in there too, aluminium carbide for instance.
jrayj Posted October 18, 2008 Author Posted October 18, 2008 I just tried this at 12 volts ~60 amps and my clean oil turned black. I will filter it and see if the product is aluminum.
jrayj Posted October 19, 2008 Author Posted October 19, 2008 just a note, if you do try this use gasoline or something. Plain clean motor oil takes a really long time to filter as I am letting it filter overnight.
hydraliskdragon Posted October 19, 2008 Posted October 19, 2008 Gasoline is a bad idea. Electrical Arching in gasoline is the same thing as lighting a lighter in a propane tank. Motor oil has a substance preventing ignition. Dont do it.
gonelli Posted October 19, 2008 Posted October 19, 2008 (edited) Electrical Arching in gasoline is the same thing as lighting a lighter in a propane tank.Dont do it. I believe you wouldn't be able to light a lighter in a propane tank since there is no oxygen to allow combustion. Well, there may be a little oxygen, but the concentrations of fuel to oxygen wouldn't allow anything to happen. Edited October 19, 2008 by gonelli Merge multiple post
insane_alien Posted October 19, 2008 Posted October 19, 2008 the fuel to oxygen ratio is well outside combustion limits it would not ignite.
jrayj Posted October 23, 2008 Author Posted October 23, 2008 Almost impossible to filter this oil. Maybe mineral oil or something but not motor oil.
