800runner Posted April 28, 2004 Posted April 28, 2004 What is the mole count on Hydrochloric acid contained in Muriatic acid? I've poured it on aluminum and zinc and it makes some strong reactions. This kind of goes along with the "making hydrochloric acid thread." Thanks for the help.
fafalone Posted April 28, 2004 Posted April 28, 2004 Muriatic acid is just another term for it, still can be any concentration. But I take it you're referring to the kind they sell in pool stores and such, and thats around 23-26% HCl by volume.
Crash Posted April 28, 2004 Posted April 28, 2004 ? Muriatic acid is another term for a certain(s) concentration of HCl? Why is it one of its old names? Why the other name..........
fafalone Posted April 28, 2004 Posted April 28, 2004 Muriatic acid is another term for HCl in any concentration.
800runner Posted April 28, 2004 Author Posted April 28, 2004 The bottle says it is 31.45% hydrochloric acid. It was inexpensive too. It only cost $2.00 for one gallon.
fafalone Posted April 28, 2004 Posted April 28, 2004 Yeah. I usually take that and distill it into a more concentrated form.
800runner Posted April 28, 2004 Author Posted April 28, 2004 How do you distill it? Is it relatively easy to do?
fafalone Posted April 28, 2004 Posted April 28, 2004 A good rule of thumb is not to try to distill your own concentrated acids if you don't know what distillation is
800runner Posted April 28, 2004 Author Posted April 28, 2004 I know the basics of distillation, but do you use expensive equipment or readily available materials?
fafalone Posted April 28, 2004 Posted April 28, 2004 I use about $60 worth of glassware for distillation in my home lab.
YT2095 Posted April 28, 2004 Posted April 28, 2004 The bottle says it is 31.45% hydrochloric acid. It was inexpensive too. It only cost $2.00 for one gallon. that`s nearly as strong as you can get HCl(aq) anyway, any more concentrated and you`de not be able to store it at standard RTP. I`de stick with what you`ve got
fafalone Posted April 28, 2004 Posted April 28, 2004 where can I order some glassware? I've found Sargent Welch to be the best equipment supplier for small scale personal labs: http://sargentwelch.com/Default.asp?
