big314mp Posted November 2, 2008 Posted November 2, 2008 Lets say I receive a rep point. Is there anyway I can tell which user sent me that point, or is the system anonymous? 1
insane_alien Posted November 2, 2008 Posted November 2, 2008 unless they leave a comment with their name in it then no, you can't tell. it is anonymous. 1
thedarkshade Posted December 21, 2008 Posted December 21, 2008 unless they leave a comment with their name in it then no, you can't tell. it is anonymous. and also it they're despreate to make friends
iNow Posted December 21, 2008 Posted December 21, 2008 Some of us prefer to sign our messages of thanks.
ydoaPs Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 iNow and mooey tend to let you know it was them.
thedarkshade Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 iNow and mooey tend to let you know it was them.even in a rep thread:rolleyes: 1
Cap'n Refsmmat Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 If people don't want reputation to be anonymous, I can allow you to see who left reputation. What would you prefer?
ydoaPs Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 I'd like to see. It's always good to know who your fanbase is.
iNow Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 OTOH, the way it's currently set allows users to choose for themselves. I don't care either way, myself.
Klaynos Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 If people know tehre might be a tendency to give rep for rep...
ydoaPs Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 If people know tehre might be a tendency to give rep for rep... While you have a point, the "spread it around" thing would help minimize that.
big314mp Posted December 22, 2008 Author Posted December 22, 2008 It's kind of funny to see this thread resurrected Cap'n, I was just curious about the process. If I actually found out, it would destroy my fantasies about secret admirers on the internet
Dak Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 http://www.scienceforums.net/forum/usercp.php can't you see who get you rep there?
iNow Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 http://www.scienceforums.net/forum/usercp.php can't you see who get you rep there? Nope (unless maybe it's different for staff). All we see are three columns. One, a link to the post. Two, the date/time rep was given. Three, the comments from the person giving it. No name, unless they were included manually within the comments.
the tree Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 Has it been considered that negative rep might be a good idea? For posts that don't break any rules as such but include lots of factual inaccuracies or very poorly presented arguments.
Gilded Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 Has it been considered that negative rep might be a good idea? For posts that don't break any rules as such but include lots of factual inaccuracies or very poorly presented arguments. AFAIK it has been considered and in my opinion it doesn't work too well, even though the users are a bit more mentally mature than YouTube users.
swansont Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 If people don't want reputation to be anonymous, I can allow you to see who left reputation. What would you prefer? Is that something that can be a user option — whether your rep is anonymous or not? AFAIK it has been considered and in my opinion it doesn't work too well, even though the users are a bit more mentally mature than YouTube users. Ah, I bask in the glow of your faint praise!
the tree Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 AFAIK it has been considered and in my opinion it doesn't work too well, even though the users are a bit more mentally mature than YouTube users. I find the thumbs up/down on YT comments quite useful actually, they prevent you from having to look at the really really really stupid comments every time a video is featured, and by the strength of the community good comments are usually kept with a reasonably high rating. 1
Cap'n Refsmmat Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 Is that something that can be a user option — whether your rep is anonymous or not? I could hack the reputation system to allow it, but I guess the easiest way to do that would be to put a note in the reputation-giving box saying "If you want the user to know who gave them this reputation, sign your username at the end of the comment" or something similar. It's a per-usergroup setting to allow people to see who gave them reputation. 1

For posts that don't break any rules as such but include lots of factual inaccuracies or very poorly presented arguments. I don't think that's a good idea at all, given what goes on in the environmental and political debate threads.

Sometimes its nice to be able to compliment a good post non-anonymously.

Cap'n Refsmmat Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 Added. If it messes up the box because it's so long, tell me (and explain what it's doing) and I'll see if I can fix it up some. 1
ydoaPs Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 What's to stop people from forging the "signature"?
