Arch2008 Posted November 4, 2008 Posted November 4, 2008 At least every few minutes: http://news.yahoo.com/s/space/20081103/sc_space/strangeportalconnectsearthtosun;_ylt=AhD9_RNgj1Q0N.EfOQfQYPkiANEA
insane_alien Posted November 4, 2008 Posted November 4, 2008 i think calling it a portal is a bit misleading, especially after the release of a certain game with the same name. more quirk of the magnetic field interactions allows particles to leak through.
DrP Posted November 4, 2008 Posted November 4, 2008 ditto - I didn't really like that terminology - interesting read though.
CaptainPanic Posted November 5, 2008 Posted November 5, 2008 The presence of magnetic field lines (as written in the article) fascinates me. If there are magnetic field lines connecting the sun and earth, then the orbit of earth is not caused by gravity alone. There must be a magnetic force as well. And I agree with previous two posts that "portal" is a misleading name. Portal suggests some kind of instant transfer.
insane_alien Posted November 5, 2008 Posted November 5, 2008 the magnetic part of the force will be absolutely tiny compared to the gravitational force though. much like the force of a flys fart being used to increase the acceleration of a A380 1
