darcher9 Posted November 7, 2008 Posted November 7, 2008 can anyone help me come to a conclusion of osmosis and diffusion with carrot in salt water
iNow Posted November 7, 2008 Posted November 7, 2008 Interesting question. I would presume that the salt in the water would pull moisture out of the carrot, but I'm not sure if or how that moisture might also be replaced by the fact the carrot is sitting in water. Curious question. I'm not a Chemistry guy, but many others here are. Hopefully one or two will be able to steer us in the right direction.
big314mp Posted November 7, 2008 Posted November 7, 2008 It depends on the salt concentration. If the water has a higher concentration of solute than the fluids in the carrot, then water will diffuse out of the carrot in an attempt to balance the concentration. Salt will also diffuse into the carrot as well. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osmotic_Pressure
elmejor Posted December 9, 2008 Posted December 9, 2008 can anyone help me come to a conclusion of osmosis and diffusion with carrot in salt water in my opinion, salt is solid in state and if we mix salt in water then diffusion takes place (intermixing of particles that is salt particle and water particle)what i am trying to say here, if the water is salty & carrot is dry in condition and we put it in water, osmosis takes place
