hermanntrude
Which blocks are these four elements in? I'm sure that some tables show La and Ac as being in the f-block and Lu and Lr in the d-block, whereas some put them all four in the f-block and some put Lu and Lr in the f-block and La and Ac in the d-block. It seems to me the whole mess of transition and inner-transition metals should be put in a d/f-block since there is so much mixing of electronic configurations. YT2095
Ce to Lu are 4F Th to Lr are 5F La and Ac are both D block
hermanntrude
there are periodic tables which place La and Ac in the f-block. There are others which place Lu and Lr in the f-block. Some do both. What do you know that the makers of these tables dont?
YT2095
I have an Electronic Configuration chart of the elements in their ground state. La and Ac have no electrons in the 4 and 5 F. Ce and Pa onwards do however, Th is classed as 5F0 for some reason even though it`s 6D2! there is no 5F1 if you have the Chemistry Data Book (I have the 2`nd edition) it`s a small red book, have a look on page 5 Edited November 28, 2008 by YT2095
Comandante
Who cares about the groups anyway though some order can be helpful at times Try the circular periodic table, don't get dizzy. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/63/Circular_periodic_table.png
