psi20 Posted May 6, 2004 Posted May 6, 2004 My clothes are shrinking. Is it because I am washing it in the wrong water temperature? Or maybe is it because I am drying it at the wrong temperature? Or maybe both? I would hate to have to conduct experiments on clothing shrinkage with my own clothes, so I'd really appreciate it if someone has an answer.
-Demosthenes- Posted May 6, 2004 Posted May 6, 2004 I don't know exactly, but I do have a full proof plan. Just wash them in cold water and dry them on extra low, and there won't be any heat to make them shrink. That's what I do if I don't know (every time I wash something) exactly what to do. I hope it works.
Sayonara Posted May 6, 2004 Posted May 6, 2004 Have you measured the clothes? You could be getting fatter Seriously though; if in doubt, wash at 40c
YT2095 Posted May 6, 2004 Posted May 6, 2004 if I rem correctly (and I`m not that domesticated anymore) Woolens will stretch and cotton will shrink, it`s something to do with how the fibers move past and over each other. that`s about all I remember about it
Sayonara Posted May 6, 2004 Posted May 6, 2004 I don't think cotton shrinks, which is why you can wash cotton whites at 90c. Iirc it's synthetics you have to be careful with. And wool too, as you say, which is easy to pulverise out of shape.
YT2095 Posted May 6, 2004 Posted May 6, 2004 cotton does shrink, it`s just that when you buy a cotton garment, it`s already pre-shrunk if you rem there was a fad in the mid to late 80`s wereby garments (jeans) were sold without being pre-shrunk and you put them on and sat in the bath to shrink them onto you (it looked nice on girls!)

[/quote'] God I remember those :-D Amazing what people will do to be 'fashionable'. As long as his cottons aren't from the 80s, he ought to be ok then!
YT2095 Posted May 6, 2004 Posted May 6, 2004 well so the theory goes, yeah but I have known the odd T`Shirt of pair of socks mysteriously becoming less than I bought although I`m sure the weight would be the same minus dirt
