This was reported in "The Sun":

and the German magazine "Bild".

Not exactly an overwhelming argument. Perhaps they are just trying to drum up support for the $50 billion dollar manned mission to Mars. If Mars were littlered with diamonds it still wouldn't be worth it to go there. But bringing back a billion microbes that would weigh less than a postage stamp might make sense. They could be studied at the ISS and never threaten the Earth with an Andromeda strain.

The article said:

"The level of activity was so great that at times it equalled the amount of the gas released at some of the most methane-rich locations on Earth."

 

While microbial life on Mars is not out of the question, I doubt there is enough for this significant amount of methane detected.

They probably should have put microscopes on the rover for detecting microorganisms.

I agree. It would be more surprising to me for there never to have been any kind of life. The problem is in proving it.
