hermanntrude Posted January 15, 2009 Posted January 15, 2009 what would you do with it? Ive just discovered i have several dozen vials, each containing 1 g of germanium. I wonder if there's anything exciting i can do with it?
YT2095 Posted January 15, 2009 Posted January 15, 2009 several dozen vials, I would sell most of them, keep a couple to experiment with and one for my element collection. I have a ~10g chunk of Ge here also, and other than trying to make a diode (cats whisker) radio, it just stays in it`s container with the other elements in my collection.
UC Posted January 15, 2009 Posted January 15, 2009 What kind of purity? I would be interested if it's semiconductor-ish grade (5 or 6 nines) Is it fine powder or small chips that still show the luster of large pieces? Just like silicon, it has rather dull chemistry unless you want to experiment with organogermanium compounds (for which the tetrachloride is a much better starting point). I would agree with YT on this one.
hermanntrude Posted January 16, 2009 Author Posted January 16, 2009 it's just a dark powder. I suspect it's low purity. I think it probably came from a nearby mine... i know they mine antimony there
