aommaster Posted May 12, 2004 Posted May 12, 2004 Which composer (if any) do u like to listen to. I like Mozart, Beethoven (actually played the moonlight sonata on the piano) and Purcell. Which composer do u guys listen to?
YT2095 Posted May 12, 2004 Posted May 12, 2004 Bachs Toccata and Fugue in D minor, especialy during a thunderstorm at night! Musorgski`s "Night on bare mountain" is also cool
aommaster Posted May 12, 2004 Author Posted May 12, 2004 nice! I missed out Bach, brilliant! I also listened to Mozart's Requiem! Man! Amazing! I wish i could compose like that! Do you know how to read/write music? Its good for a hobby!
Dave Posted May 12, 2004 Posted May 12, 2004 Big fan of film composers (which I count as classical) like John Williams. My favourite 'proper' classical composer would probably be someone like Mozart or Beethoven, although they can be quite dull at times. Can also play Moonlight Sonata
aommaster Posted May 12, 2004 Author Posted May 12, 2004 Nice! My teacher said that it would get me an A on AS level music and a B on A level!
YT2095 Posted May 12, 2004 Posted May 12, 2004 yes, I used to be able to but am long out of practice I`ve writen quite a few peices of musik and songs (I was in a band for 3 years during my early 20`s). I still like to play occasionaly, but only for my own and my wifes pleasure, I think she must be tone deaf though LOL I`ve got a pic of my Synths somewhere, I`ll see if I can dig them out, if not I`ll take some more if ya like, it`s especialy cool when I plug my elec guitar into them and mess about with the sounds
jordan Posted May 12, 2004 Posted May 12, 2004 Chopin is my favorite. I also like Rachmoninov's piano concerto #3. Oh, and I'll add to the list of those who have played the moonlight sonata (although movement 3 was my favorite).
Dave Posted May 12, 2004 Posted May 12, 2004 Chopin is very good, especially some of his piano sonatas.
Glider Posted May 13, 2004 Posted May 13, 2004 I like Debussey. I particularly like guitar; Francisco Terrega, Isaac Albeniz, Enrique Granados, Gaspar Sanz, et al.
aommaster Posted May 13, 2004 Author Posted May 13, 2004 oh wow! Really classical music lovers here! Nice to meet you all! Now I know that I am not alone!
admiral_ju00 Posted May 13, 2004 Posted May 13, 2004 My all time favorite composer: J. S.Bach. Some of the others whom I love: Mozart, Bethoven, Vivaldi, Correli, Bhrams, Strauss, Mahler, too many others. Basically, I love anything that is erroneously deemed classical with the exception of English and German Operas.
Dave Posted May 13, 2004 Posted May 13, 2004 I had to play part of a Mahler symphony for my Grade 8 piece so I've gotten into his style of music quite a lot. Also had to play a piece by Guilmant, so I've listened to a bit of his stuff. Debussy is also one of my favourites, especially his piano pieces.
NSX Posted May 14, 2004 Posted May 14, 2004 Vivaldi's good. Bach. Mozart. but like someone said, John Williams is reallly good w/ the music nowadays too.
Dave Posted May 14, 2004 Posted May 14, 2004 I really think that the way he can go from one theme to another so smoothly is absolutely outstanding. My favourite example from this is probably at the end of episode 2, where he somehow manages to take the tune from the love theme to the end credits - absolutely brilliant
jordan Posted May 14, 2004 Posted May 14, 2004 I'm assuming you're are talking about John Williams. A lot of his songs are very simple, and that's what I like about them. I have heard several that rely on just three or four notes for the entire melody. They are still great songs. One of my favorites is his Schindler's List theme, although it uses more than four notes for the melody, it uses some unique intervals instead. It's all very good stuff.
Dave Posted May 14, 2004 Posted May 14, 2004 The Harry Potter theme is (imo) one of the best ever created; it fits the films perfectly.
aommaster Posted May 15, 2004 Author Posted May 15, 2004 The Harry Potter theme is (imo) one of the best ever created; it fits the films perfectly Would that be counted as classical music, or juts a soundtrack? 'Cause the classical music I was talking about was about 200 years ago
Dave Posted May 15, 2004 Posted May 15, 2004 It's classical in my opinion; it uses an orchestra to great extent. I don't see how it differs in any great shape to classical music from 200 years ago.
jordan Posted May 15, 2004 Posted May 15, 2004 It's just about the same thing as any classical composer would have had access to, only styles change. The use of chord structure, note spacing, methodic vs. expressive styling have all changed even within what you are refering to as the classical period. There were many like the romantic and boroque that were very different because times changed. I would say that John Williams is just an extension of this into the 20th and now 21st century (albeit one the few).
