To plate precious metals (excluding silver) does it just take a pyrex pan, 2 clamps, wire for clamps, power source object to be plated, distilled water and the metal anode?

All metals are different but most plating requires a specific solution that is acidic and at a certain ph level and temperature. The solution also contains the metal to be plated (ie disolving a salt of that metal).

if the solution is a salt of the metal, then plating will be significantly faster. however, it is not required and just having the anode made of that metal will make the salt for you and plate whatever precious metal you want....

only something very unreactive, like gold, will require for the solution to be a gold salt
