I have to write a "news article" about anything I want. It can be science-related or not, but I want to make it really interesting the whole way through. Any suggestions?

What is the goal of the assignment?

-Do you have to write about recent news (showing that you read the newspaper)?

-Do you have to show that you can write in "newspaper style" (showing that you have the skills in the English language)?

-Something else?

An important thing when you are writing anything is: know your audience! If you keep in mind who you're writing it for, then you know which style you must use... and also if you should include a long introduction to explain basics to the newbies, or if you can make it more complicated for the experts (there are more variations on this theme, but choosing whether it's for experts or n00bs is a good start).

It might be fun for you to roast the ridiculous morons who wrote this story:

http://catchthefire.com.au/blog/2009/02/10/media-release-abortion-laws-to-blame-for-bush-fires/

SYNOPSIS: The bush/brush fires happening in Australia right now are the result of laws they passed which are more relaxed about abortion.

Or, perhaps this one which suggests that the teachers and administrators at the University of Oklahoma are "ignoring parallel theories of evolution" by not teaching Creationism and Intelligent Design... that they are "indoctrinating their students" and that "there is a God," and Oklahoma tax payers believe this, and that "Withholding that truth from our students does them a disservice and damages our society."

If you want something a little bit more well reasoned and interesting, lacking the profound logical fallacies and spurious premises of the previous two, and also that would appeal to teenagers, you might look at this article.

It's about how "Science Finds the Secret of a Hot Kiss."

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/science/article5683569.ece

IF you always thought you had a special chemistry with your loved one, you may finally have been proved right.

Researchers have found that a passionate kiss unleashes a complex chemical surge into the brain which makes a lover feel excited, happy or relaxed.

There is also speculation that this hormone release may be triggered directly by an exchange of sexually stimulating pheromones in the saliva. <

Educational, and informative. :D

iNow, I'm picturing you in some kind of Bond villain lair, with hundreds of computer screens monitoring newspapers all over the world for anti-science editorials.

Just copy an article and put your name on it. Or are students held to a higher standard than journalists these days?

Kidding aside, if you have read news stories, think of one you liked and write something in similar style or about a similar subject. Are you allowed to make stuff up?

Bwahahahaha!!!

Er... Google Reader. :)

I have several feeds, but this is one of them which is often incredibly enlightening and disturbing all at the same time for the story types above:

Yeah Capn its more so to show we can write in a "journalist like way" and we must come up with a catchy title.

I appreciate the suggestions but I found out it had to be school related, so I was thinking

1) Pushing School Starting Hours Ahead to Get More Sleep.

Or something. *scratches head*
