Hie i am doing my final project, and i will be working on an Automatic glass filling system for champagne.This will involve emptying the champagne into 4-5 glasses and having them ready for delivery to the respective tables.

I am trying to find out if anyone has an idea of how i can sense the presence of the champagne glass and be able to have the system to tell if the glasses are empty or not?Any ideas??

If I was building it, I would use an electric eye (light beam) that gets broken when you place the glass under the spigot. Then have the dispenser pump out a specific amount with settings for two or three size servings (if required).

:) thanks the electric light(opto-electronics) is a good idea but the thing is i did not want to move the tray in which the glasses would be placed.I wanted the spigot to be the one that move to the empty glasses.Why? because if i am to move the tray, i will have the glasses falling all over the place....

Ah, that does complicate things a bit. I could imagine placing the tray on something like a turntableto rotate the glasses under the spigot but can see no simpler way of doing what you want to do without bringing robotics into the picture.

Proximity sensors are similar to light beam switches only the don't require a beam to be broken so you might want to look into those. The last ones I bought were at grainger.com I don't see why the spigot couldn't move toward the glass until the sensor (attached to the moving spigot) sensed the glass.

 

Robotics of some sort will definately be needed. servocity.com has all kinds of servos, pan and tilt devices, turn tables etc.

 

You could even use a proximity sensor aimed straight down into the glass to detect when the champagne was near the top and stop pouring.

The "spigot" could be a tall rolling thing that rolled over the top of the glasses placed in a line. It could have the eye beam on each leg to determine when it was over the top of a glass so it could pour the champagne. Then a sensor to determine when it's full (or a predetermined amount of pour time) and move on to the next one. It could keep going forever as long as all the glasses were in a straight line. Or have limit switches on a track that it rides in and make it reverse when it get to the end so glasses can be reloaded and it will start all over again.
